Chapter Twelve

I set my sister on her feet, crouched down so that we were at eye level, and cupped her face. The tears rolling down her cheeks stung me, as if they were made of acid. Swallowing a lump in my throat, I gave her what I hoped was an easy smile. It was shaky, at best. I tried not to focus on her quivering lip, or the fact that she was so upset she was still shaking.

“So, Till. Big brother is kind of in a bind.”

She rubbed at her eyes and scowled. “I haven’t called you big brother since I was like six.”

I closed one eye like I was trying to get a better look at her. “My bad. You’re a big girl now. Am I right?”

Her eyes rolled into her head. “What do you want?”

My lips twitched. Manipulation had never worked well on my sister. “I need your help.” Leaning in, I dropped my voice. “We’re going monster hunting.”

When I pulled back, her eyes were comically wide. She looked from me, up to Mi na, and then back. “Follow me.” She pressed a finger to her lips. “And be cool.”

I stood up and Mi na and I followed Tilly through the crowd. She led us behind the school, which was relatively free of people, then leaned against the brick wall and stared up.

“Justice,” she began in a whisper. “You said that monster thing you let escape...”

I furrowed my eyebrows. “Technically, you let it escape, but go on.”

“You said it feeds on hate? Can it also, like, make people hateful?”

I nodded. “Not only that, they can twist it, make people act on it. Project it.”

Tilly sighed. “Then, I think it’s here. At the school.”

Mi na sort of laughed and shook her head. “This is the coolest day of my life.”

I shot her a look before focusing on Tilly again. “What makes you say that?”

She splayed her hands out. Her eyes got all big, like she was about to put on a performance. “The day started out so good, right?” She clapped. “It was like everything I’ve ever seen in my stories.”

“Stories?” Mi na asked, hooking her thumbs through her belt loops.

“I watch a lot of streaming dramas,” Tilly told her.

Mi na held her hand up, as if telling Tilly to stop. Her eyes widened like she was receiving an electric shock. “Have you watched Wayward Park?

My sister gasped and jumped up and down. “I love Wayward Park! I’m team Marcus.”

“Yes! Marcus is so—”

I snapped my fingers in both of their faces. “Focus, ladies!” Planting my hand on the wall above Tilly’s head to brace myself, I leaned over and peered around the corner to make sure no one was coming. When I was sure it was safe, I pulled back. “Now, back to why you think the shade is here.”

She nodded. “Like I was saying, everything was going great. My outfit was perfect, my hair was laid. I was the new girl, everyone wanted to show me around... and
